CPB Entry- The Beetle

“Judgment in my case has still to be given. You will find that I am not the guilty wretch you apparently imagine. And there are few things more disagreeable to one’s self-esteem than to learn, too late, that one has persisted in judging another man too harshly.” (182)

Paul Lessington seems to be a muitually disliked person but why. Just cause he is a politician with a mysterious past, one of which no one has any knowledge of. Whether it be good or bad and Paul does not seem eager to share with anyone. There seems to be something further going on with him.

    Hi Paige!
I like the quote you took from the novel and the analysis you provided. I am interested to see how Paul Lessingham transforms within the novel; I agree that there seems to be more to him than we have seen, or he just continues to have a bad reputation. I haven’t seen many other commonplace books mention this idea of the suspicion of Paul Lessingham, so I like that you raised a new topic of discussion.

    Hi Paige!

I enjoyed the quote that you chose for you CPB as well as your thoughts on it. I would definitely agree that there is so much mystery in Lessingham character that I can’t wait to discover his actual connection to the beetle and if we find out what happened that made him, as a man of such high ranking, to cower in fear at the mention of an insect. To relegate this back to my commonplace book entry where I discussed Egypt and the fascination that Englishmen had with it during the Victorian era, I wonder exactly what Paul could have been doing and what mystery he stumbled upon.
